AVE MOD V2
This circuit is one the first I experimented with. After modifying a few video devices, I wanted to work on a little standalone glitch circuit, this is where the search for video schematic started.
I started taking interest in electronic with audio, so I was quite used to find information about guitar pedals, synthesizers, studio gear, but there’s much less about analog video on the internet.
However I found this circuit traced by Philip Baljeu from an Archer Video Enhancer/Sound Mixer and posted on the electro-music forum.

Here’s the result, it adds 5 potentiometer, 4 switches and audioreactivity so the circuit can react with an external audio signal.
The circuit is PAL/NTSC compatible, it’s powered by either a 9V battery or a 9V DC power supply and works best with a CRT TV. US PSU
Circuit boards, kits and assembled circuits are now available through the store of the website.

Combines is now available, it is in stock and ready to ship on Syntonie website, and some units will be on their way to retailers soon! Demo video is up on Youtube (link in bio)
Combines is a triple analog combiner, aimed at combining two signals in various ways.
Each of the three channels features:
- AVG: average of the two inputs, (A+B)/2
- DIFF: difference of the two inputs, ((A-B)/2)+0.5)
- MIN: minimum of the two inputs, min(A, B)
- MAX: maximum of the two inputs, max(A, B)
- XOR: absolute of the difference of the two inputs, abs(A-B)
- MIX: mix of three of the above, scaled to 1V, different on each of the three channels
CH1: (AVG+DIFF+MIN)/3
CH2: (AVG+MIN+XOR)/3
CH3: (AVG+DIFF+XOR)/3
As the front panel suggests, Combines can be used to combine a horizontal and vertical triangle signals (like rectified ramps or oscillators), resulting in 2D shapes, represented on the outputs. Of course, the inputs are not limited to triangle waves, as any signals can be combined together, such as different wave shapes, as well as 2D shapes to create even more complex shapes or an external video signal.
It features 3 channels to allow for RGB processing, however the channels can be chained together as well, increasing the complexity of the resulting output.
Specs:
- 8HP
- 125mA +12V
- 0mA -12V
- 0mA +5V
- 42mm deep

Matrice is now available, it is in stock and ready to ship on Syntonie website, and some units will be on their way to retailers soon! Demo video is up on Youtube (link in bio)
Matrice is a 1x3 matrix mixer with its outputs normalized to three VCAs.
Used in a RGB processing context, just before the RGB encoder, the matrix section allows to reach a great variety of color palettes, especially when using matte/keyed shapes or posterizing.
The VCAs essentially works as a fade to black, allowing to tame the colors, which is especially useful after the matrix, since it can outputs signals up to 3V, as well as inverting them, that can result in a really bright composition.
Specs:
- 16HP
- 310mA +12V
- 0mA -12V
- 0mA +5V
- 42mm deep

Another quick patch with a similar setup as the previous video, but with ramps and 2D shapes from Rampes instead of an external video signal through Entrée. Recorded in 720p60.
Matrice is available as a pre-order on Syntonie website.

Synthesis patch made with Rampes, Combines, Seuils, Matrice and Sortie.
Various ramps, mirrored ramps and 2D shapes from Rampes are combined together using the three channels of Combines, outputs of Combines going to Seuils signal inputs and CV inputs to generate hard shapes/mattes, which are later processed through Matrice for color tuning using its matrix mixer, and its triple VCA to cut through the colors/creating negative space, finally outputs of Matrice are encoded with Sortie in 720p60.

While I enjoy patching synthesis in 720p60 for the increased resolution and frame rate in comparison to SD (PAL/NTSC), a good in between is ED (for enhanced definition), here 576p50.
It keeps the SD resolution and look, with those nice jagged/aliased edges, while benefiting from being progressive rather than interlaced, giving that smooth motion without requiring deinterlacing.
However, not a lot of devices can support ED standards, here a Retrotink 5X is used to convert Component 576p50 to HDMI 1080p50 for capture.
Modules used are Rampes, Animate, Seuils, Isohélie, and a couple work in progress 😉

In combination with Entrée and Sortie, Seuils makes for a nice coloriser by processing R, G and B channels from an external video source.
Entrée converts the external Component video signal to RGB, so it can be processed by Seuils, and Sortie encodes the resulting RGB back to Component.
Patching feedback from Seuils outputs back into its CV input generates glitchy effects like ringing and/or clipping.
Recorded in Component 720p60.

Seuils is back in stock!
Here, it is used to modulate Stable parameters, with Stable pre-proc output going to Seuils inputs, making this keyed/clipped-like effect. Stable post-proc output is going into Seuils CV to add some feedback, with Seuils attenuverters controlling the amount of feedback.
Recorded in Composite NTSC/480i59.94.

Rare picture of myself in my natural habitat, staring (and probably cussing) at an oscilloscope.
Went into a major overhaul of my workspace at the beginning of the year, partitioning it into better defined areas, as well as adding more storage space. Pictured here are the prototyping bench (left) and the assembly bench (right).

Animate EXP and Solaire are back in stock!
Here is one of my go-to patch: ramps and shapes from Rampes into Cadrans, with amplitude modulation from Animate + Animate EXP to add some motion. Outputs of Cadrans into Solaire, outputs of Solaire into ReverseLandfill Matrix Mixer, encoded in Component 720p60 with Sortie.
(Note that this is the last batch of Animate EXP and it won’t be re-stocked, so probably time to grab one to add some waveforms to your Animate)

Stable is back in stock!
I was asked if Cadrans would make a good addition to Stable. While it is probably not as instantly gratifying as other processors like Solaire, Seuils or Isohélie, Cadrans and its amplitude modulation is a good way to modulate how much feedback is applied to Stable.
To do so, Stable post-proc output is connected to Cadrans input, output of Cadrans going back to Stable CV inputs, closing the feedback loop. Then, a pitch sequence from a step sequencer (here a Beatstep Pro) is used as CV for Cadrans, essentially automating the feedback in sync with the music.
Recorded in Composite NTSC/480i59.94
Next on the re-stock list are Solaire, Animate EXP and VU001C.
